Dining at Pretty Kitchen

FOR a hungry individual, the bright multicolored lights at this building’s façade is not an enticing welcome — it looks more like a club/bar. But push the doors and you’ll be surprised at what the newly opened Pretty Kitchen in Garapan offers.

If I had not heard that Pretty Kitchen was serving lunch and dinner, I would not had ventured there last Saturday night.

A jolly food staffer escorted us to a table and brought us menus. Wasting no time, my companion chose the $7 iron platter beef rib while I went for the $10 fish in a hot pot.

We didn’t have to wait long for our orders. The iron beef platter was served on a sizzling plate wrapped in foil. My order was served a few minutes later, tender slices of fish with tofu and mushroom bits on a covered pot. It was a little bit sweetish for my taste but I skipped meals for the whole day and was really hungry. We cleared our plates  and then  leaned back to relax.

Across from our table, three diners were enjoying the chafing dish specials. Food staffers placed a big chafing dish on top of a burning stove on the table and they cooked the meal right there — hot and flavorful straight from the pot. You can choose seafood, chicken, pork or beef with your vegetables. If we were not that hungry, we would have gone for the chafing dish.

Pretty Kitchen serves a fusion of Chinese, Korean and Japanese cuisines.

Try their wide selection of dumplings and dimsum, soups, congee, tofu dishes, noodles, vegetable dishes, fish, chicken, beef, pork, seafood, including shark fin, dishes.

You can also try Pretty Kitchen’s version of roasted Peking duck and other Chinese favorites.

Enjoy glasses or bottles of your favorite beers and wines and special Chinese wines like Hua Diao Shao Xing.

Pretty Kitchen’s dining room is not big, just enough for four tables with high backed seats wrapped in animal print fabrics. Each table can accommodate four to six diners each but the place screams comfort. The dining room is like a modern wonderland with artificial shrubs and greenery hanging from the ceilings and on the glass windows. A 42-inch LCD screen mounted on the wall provides entertainment to the diners.

Push open the inner doors and you will be transported to a plush videoke room where you can sing and have a grand time.

Diners can also have their drinks at the tables outside where you can enjoy the fresh breeze and listen to the soothing sounds of water gurgling from two small fountains near the entrance.

Pretty Kitchen is located across from Lollipops in Garapan. It is  open for lunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Cards are accepted. For reservations/inquiries, call 233-8588. (First published at the Marianas Variety)
