Coffee Care: Hangout on the hill

PERCHED on an ideal spot halfway up to Capital Hill is a coffee house/restaurant that has been a favorite of many residents on Saipan for so many years — Coffee Care.

I’ve tried a cup of Coffee Care’s bestseller some months ago — the coffee float which, staffer Norie recommended and I’d been wanting to go back for more.

My chance to return came one dinner time on a Tuesday some weeks back with a buddy but I was not in the mood to order coffee. Not so hungry, I just opted for the Cafe Club Sandwich for $7.95. The friendly food staff served my sandwich — toasted cracked wheat bread with roasted turkey breast, Italian bacon, tomato, lettuce, mustard, mayo and Swiss cheese.

My buddy ordered the seafood pasta seafood pasta ala Genovese which is grilled wahoo fillet and prawns, fresh seafood pasta au gratin — a mouthwatering combination of grilled wahoo fillet, prawns, calamari, clams and capers tossed in fresh pasta Pappardeele for $14.95. The seafood pasta also came with a dish of fresh green salad, which I sampled and eventually finished.

Only a few diners shared the restaurant with us as it was almost closing time but dining there in daytime is a different story.

The restaurant is known not only for its rich espresso beverages, unique pasta dishes, and fresh food but for a stunning view of the Saipan lagoon, Managaha  and a spectacular sunset.

Coffee Care menu includes salads, pasta, sandwiches, seafood and meat entrees.

Coffee Care is also one of those few restaurants on island that opens for breakfast. Start your day with a selection of omelets and huevos rancheros and more, and blueberry pancakes and fried rice on Saturday and Sunday mornings as a special treat.

For Tuesday nights, Coffee Care offers Italian dinner specials which includes pork piccata parma or medallions of pork tenderloin coated with egg and parmesan cheese and pan-fried in olive oil; Tagliatelle Verdi stile guiseppe which is fresh spinach pasta sautéed with bacon, prawns tomatoes, olives, chilies and herbs and finished with white wine and more.

On Wednesday nights, try any of the Japanese dinner specials such as tuna sashimi, tuna tataki, katsudon, oyakodon, tonkatsu, steakdon, teriyaki chicken tendon, and the Mexican dinner specials served every Thursday for $14.95 —fish tacos, prawns ceviche and cheese quesadilla served with corn tortilla chips, sour cream and guacamole, grilled sliced or New York steak and breast of chicken, wahoo Ceviche which is grilled yahoo fillet served with sautéed vegetables, and chicken and prawns.

If you’re not hungry, Coffee Care is still the best place to hang out and sip a cup of coffee, ranging from $3 to $4.75 a cup as you enjoy the view.

Coffee Care opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. every day. Major credit cards are accepted. For reservations, call 323-5282. (article originally published here:
