ern. I saw this eye-catching sign on the roadside on my way from Sinapalo to Songsong for the first time last month, and decided I would have to try what the place offers.
The chance came the next day when I passed by the place again, hungry and spent from driving around used and abandoned roads as I explored Rota in a rented car.
Barefoot Tavern is your typical seaside hangout with wooden floors, tables and chairs, a wooden counter and real trees as pillars. The place is open, giving diners a spectacular ocean view. It is one place whose name alone suggests that you can run barefoot in the sand and linger for a leisurely drink at the counter or at any of the outside tables on a clear day.
Tavern owner Pat Songsong said they named the place Barefoot Tavern — which they opened in August last year — because of its seaside location, where customers can literally go barefoot if they want to.

Barefoot Tavern offers a $4 daily lunch special available only for takeout. Monday’s special is fried chicken, Tuesday is hamburger steak, chicken curry for Wednesday, dried beef for Thursday and fish or the chef’s special on Fish of the Day on Fridays. Each order comes with rice, pickle, and iced tea.
Since it was a Friday, I tried the chef’s special Fish of the Day, choosing two medium-sized red snappers over slices of mahi-mahi. A pleasant food staffer served me a tall glass of cold iced tea. While waiting for my order, I snapped some photos of the place, all the while trying hard to keep my balance and not to get blown away by the strong winds.
Gigantic waves rolled and crashed angrily on the shores brought about by the bad weather — sights and sounds that some of the other diners found disturbing but which I found exciting and refreshing.

For the calorie watchers, Barefoot Tavern offers a selection of delicious vegetable dishes that come with scoops of rice.
Rota’s Barefoot Tavern is your perfect place to hang out with friends or while the time away as you watch the latest movies, or just chill out with a glass of juice or soft drinks, or a bottle of cold beer as you listen to the waves crashing on the sharp rocks a few meters away.
Barefoot Tavern offers dine-in and catering services. They are open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner every day. Only cash is accepted for now.
